Carnival of Socialism
This round comes to you complete with its own soundtrack - Another World is Possible, by Stephan Smith. He is a great leftist singer/songwriter, with plenty of music available on his website. A big thanks goes out to Benjamin Solah for hosting the first round and to Mike Shafer for hosting the second.
No Amnesty for Old People - The "reasonable conservative" Jon Swift explains why senior citizens are apparently having trouble with the Medicare D plan - they simply like to complain. If it isn't about how young people dress then it will be about how they aren't receiving the medicines they need to live. I guess there is just no pleasing some people!
Humphrey McQueen Says We Must Confront Nationalism Instead of Wishing It Away - Angers Conservative Left - David J at Lets Take Over describes a seminar by Humphrey McQueen and offers some insight into the role nationalism should play in socialist movement. He also provides an interesting look at Australian Left politics and the tendency of conservative leftists.
Not You Usual Left Wing Rant - Eugene Plawiuk at Le Revue Guache urges the Canadian Left to distingush itself from other political group rather than adopt more conservative or liberal idealogies. How so? By a revolutionary change in the tax codes. Also the only article in the round to feature the word "exactomundo."
Ribble Campaigners Message To Councillors - Riversider at Save the Ribble gives a clear example of local activism. With a sample letter to city councillors, Riversider explains the issue and also serves as a model for how to affect concrete change at the local level.
Israel's Own Nuremburg Laws? - Scott, the Angry White Kid, shows that there is writing on the wall in Israel and it is not pretty. In fact, it looks a little like something we've seen before.
Prostitution: One Solution = Decriminalization - LouiseFeminista at Stroppyblog takes a socialist look at solving the issue of prostitution. Solidarity with unionizing sex workers seems to be in order because under patriarchal capitalism, aren't we all on our backs?
How Much Is A Doctor Worth? - A good doctor can save your life; a bad one can take it away. How much is getting the good doctor worth to you? It's an interesting question. Dr John Crippen at the NHS Blog Doctor takes a look at how the market system simply doesn't apply to the healthcare industry because, well, life isn't a simple commodity.
Seeing Red and Make Richard Branson History - Merrick at The Sharpener and lenin from Lenin's Tomb both take a look at the world through the wrap around neo-liberal sunglasses of Bono - and they don't like what they see. Sweatshops don't make poverty history and the plan of Product Red is to use consumerism to fight over-consumerism (apparently 2 + 2 = . . . 1? I don't know, I can't keep up with the ever changing logic of CEO of rock n roll). Both these articles offer sharp and insightful critique of the social movements that connect Bob Geldoff to Dorian Gray.
That wraps up the third round of the Carnival of Socialism! Another big thanks to John Angliss for creating this carnival. Eugene Plawiuk at Le Revue Guache will be hosting round four on June 11. For more info, consult the Carnival's website.
It's been a blast hosting the carnival. See you all in a fortnight!
